Worldwide Mobile Internet Use Surpasses Desktop for the First Time Ever

Word just in. According to StatCounter Global Stats, mobile and tablet devices accounted for 51.3% of internet usage worldwide in October compared to 48.7% by desktop. To put it another way, mobile internet use has now surpassed the popularity of desktop worldwide.

While this is big news, there were earlier signs during 2016, so this does not come as a particularly huge surprise. Earlier during the year Google officially confirmed that mobile searches surpassed desktop searches in 10 countries, which includes US and Japan.
